curiosity – compost – connection

For people who see life as a puzzle worth tending

Welcome!

Joy-LSMiller

I tell stories that change lives. A lifelong photographer, speaker, teacher, and storyteller based in Quechee, VT and Lebanon, NH, I explore how to live a meaningful, connected life in a rapidly changing world. My work is rooted in curiosity, connection, and an unexpected muse: compost. Both literal and metaphoric, compost fuels my ongoing investigations into the healing power of showing up for what you love.

Through photographic projects such as Compost: Muse & Metaphor, Lebanon Landfill: An Intimate Portrait, and Meandering Mold: Messages from a Garden Library, I examine the regenerative possibilities found in places most overlook. Whether processing 13 tons of compost over 13 years, composting my Harvard diploma and documenting the transformation, or creating a garden library to navigate grief, I use the natural cycles of decay and renewal to illuminate how awe, meaning, and resilience emerge in everyday life.

As a speaker, educator, and facilitator, I bring people into spacious conversations about purpose, place, and possibility. My keynote talks and weekly Substack newsletter, 13 Tons of Love, invite audiences to reimagine their relationships with the people, places, and possessions they hold dear. With equal parts inquiry and inspiration, I share what I discover in the garden and beyond, offering pathways to move through overwhelm and reconnect with what truly matters. I also lead workshops—both online and in person—that encourage participants to engage thoughtfully with their creative and personal landscapes, including sessions on uncluttering photo libraries and cultivating meaningful practices of attention.

A founding member of Sustainable Hanover (NH), I hold degrees in Art History (Harvard), Business Administration (University of Virginia), and Teaching (Upper Valley Educator’s Institute). My solo exhibitions include Compost: Muse & Metaphor at the Griffin Museum of Photography in Massachusetts.

I am known for my optimistic spirit and my gift for finding meaning everywhere. I enjoy embroidering old clothes, writing letters, working jigsaw puzzles, and digging into the soil. I live in Quechee, Vermont, with my husband and our dog Lilly. Our adult children often join us on family vacations, where gathering around a fire, sharing food, and laughing together remain cherished traditions.

I bring both joy and thoughtful reflection to all I do—and invite others to discover the transformative power of regeneration, curiosity, and connection in their own lives.
