In The Library Garden

curiosity • compost • connection

The meandering mold found within the pages of decomposing books feels like a message from the future and the past converging now in a small shady garden at the end our yard, inviting exploration, curiosity and wonder.

“There is nothing more beautiful to me than the regeneration, transformation, and renewal that occurs in so many unseen places.”

Project Statement

Welcome to my Garden Library. Between March 2022 and April 2024, it was a living laboratory where groups of books slowly decomposed between logs, offering stage ‘sets’ for ephemeral fungi and meandering mold. This once forgotten part of our property was a garden built on layers of leaf litter, household detritus, compost and grit. The books served as edges, containing the fertile soil. For two years I documented these objects as they “melted” into the earth.

In February 2024, however, I felt compelled to cultivate a more intimate relationship with these books by removing them from their “shelves” and exploring what they contained. The images in this collection reveal what I found and are a thematic continuation of previous work which similarly focuses on decomposition.

There is nothing more beautiful to me than the regeneration, transformation and renewal that occurs in so many unseen places. This work feels like a message from the future and the past converging now in this small shady garden at the end our yard, inviting exploration, curiosity and wonder.
